Faces of Service: Zoe

“Growing up in a close-knit community that has always supported one another has been one of the greatest gifts in my life. From a young age, I’ve been passionate about helping others and doing whatever I can to make a difference. When I first heard about the Student Volunteer Army (SVA) through personal connections, I knew it would be the perfect platform to pursue one of my deepest passions.

My interest in volunteering truly began when my hometown, Te Tairāwhiti endured many struggles. My community has been impacted by significant weather events as well as other struggles that have been challenging for the local community and rural areas. This has added fuel to my desire to help people and to serve my community in whatever ways possible.

Since then, I’ve focused on helping young people and families while building meaningful relationships. I’ve volunteered at local pet shelters, supported school events, and joined a youth group called Raise Up. Being a part of Raise Up, surrounded by others who share similar values, has helped me develop social skills and grow as a person.

Volunteering is a rewarding experience that allows you to make a difference while gaining personal fulfillment. I believe you should start by focusing on causes you’re passionate about, whether it’s helping children, supporting the elderly, or advocating for the environment. Research local opportunities, such as community groups or events, and be consistent and reliable in your commitment. Approach volunteering with an open mind and an open heart, ready to learn new skills and embrace new experiences.

I cannot thank the Student Volunteer Army enough for the experience it has gifted me. As the saying goes, ‘Volunteers are not paid because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.’”
