ROTORUA LAKES HIGH SCHOOL

Rotorua Lakes High School

The students researched to find out the scale of homelessness in NZ and Rotorua, and government/NGO initiatives to combat it. A guest speaker from Love Soup (feed the homeless) came to explain the local situation to the group. We did an investigation of local council policies and initiatives around homelessness.

Our class also had a lesson on youth social action using other examples eg child poverty, transgender issues, land wars commemoration. This lead to a discussion around types of citizenship / social action methods, which resulted in students creating a detailed social action plan of how to help the homeless in Rotorua and if possible carry this out.
