The SVA Laundry Service
Do you need help drying your laundry?
Free laundry collection and drying service for those most impacted by the Bromley Stench
We know it's rough living with this stench

  • Drying clothing is challenging without clean fresh air and drying inside creates dampness, which can be unhealthy.

  • Many people don't have a clothes dryer or can't afford the power bill that comes with using the clothes dryer at home all the time.

  • Driving to a laundromat to dry clothing can be a real hassle - especially when you have to do it all the time and juggle children and work.

And we know it's the small things that matter.
We all know what it's like to live through disasters and sometimes it's the small things that count. While we can't help with cleaning exterior of houses due to potential insurance implications or provide other professional services, assisting with laundry is a simple and effective way volunteers can support those who need it. Don't be whakamā - you're most welcome to ask us for assistance and we'd love to help out.

We dry your laundry

We have individual volunteers who may collect your laundry and dry it at their home and we have volunteers who will collect laundry and dry it at a commercial laundromat. Your laundry will be dried in one single load.

We drop it home with a smile
After drying your laundry, we drop it back to you. We will do our absolute best to ensure nothing goes missing or a sock isn't dropped! However, if that does happen, please be paitent as it will take some time to retrace footsteps!

FAQs
My washing is already wet, can you help right away?
Unfortunately not. SVA or a volunteer will call you and let you know the approximate time we can collect your laundry. We will usually call the evening before.

What does it cost?
This is a free service provided by volunteers. We're lucky to have the support of some amazing organisations like the Rata Foundation, Christchurch City Council and Citycare Property who support us to do mobilisations like this.

Can I use it every week?
Yes - you are welcome to use this service once a week while it is operating. At this stage, we do not know how long we will be running the programme.

How many loads of washing can you do?
We suggest one load of washing, but you can discuss doing more than that with the volunteer.

Who do I call if I have other questions?
Please call the SVA call centre on 03 288 1494 or 0800 005902 for more information.

Terms and Conditions
By electing to use this service, you accept that all liabilities and damages to clothes that may occur are not the responsibility of the SVA or the volunteers involved. Please read the terms and conditions below for further details.

Suitability for Laundering
By using our service, you agree that your clothes are suitable to be dried using heat in a tumble dryer. We cannot be responsible for any damage to clothing that is not suitable for this standard laundering process. Similarly, we reserve the right to refuse to service items that we feel will be hazardous to our staff, such as items heavily soiled with human or animal waste. This is for the health and safety of our team.

Damaged Laundry
We will do everything we can to avoid damaging your laundry. Unfortunately there are limitations to what we can do. For example, we don't have time to check your pockets to see if you have left anything in them. Therefore, we can't be held responsible if something left in your laundry (like lipstick, chewing gum, or a pen) causes any damage. Similarly, if you call and tell us that you left your favorite bracelet, or anything else, in your pocket, we can’t guarantee that we will find or return it.

All laundering processes, regardless of how gentle, cause normal wear and tear on clothing. As a result, we cannot be responsible for any wear and tear of laundry, including loss of buttons, fading, fatiguing, holes, or abrasions. Similarly, we reserve the right to decline cleaning any particular piece of laundry if we think it will lead to trouble.

Cleaning and drying laundry also creates other risks. We do not individually examine every garment prior to placing it in the laundry. Therefore, if something is "dry-clean only," or otherwise unsuitable for common washing and drying techniques, please do not include it in the laundry you give to us.

We wash all items together as our standard procedure. However, if you divide your clothes into two separate bags before your pick-up, we can run two separate loads. It is important to let us know if this is what is needed. Note that we do not separate clothes according to your instruction, and ask that you do the separation and take responsibility for what's in each load. Along the same lines, we can't be held responsible for the re-disposition of colors (aka bleeding) or dimensional changes (aka shrinking or stretching).
Lost Laundry
We would love to be able to inventory every piece of laundry you give us. Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to do so. As a result we can't be held responsible for any lost laundry; we simply have no efficient way of verifying that we actually received any particular piece of laundry in the first place.

If you do believe you are missing something from your delivery, please notify us within 24 hours of receiving your clean clothes — we are much more likely to find misplaced laundry if it is reported early.
Allergies
We do dry clothes in shared machines where other clothes have been and it is possible that small amounts of other detergents, which may not be hypoallergenic, may leave residues. Please be aware and take necessary precautions if needed as we cannot be responsible for this.
